A Barnsley Shopping Centre is set to play a major part in the continued regeneration of the town.

Barnsley Council Planners have approved plans for the Alhambra Shopping Centre to extend and develop for leisure use.

The multimillion pound plans which will include a nine screen cinema and six restaurants will help to build a greater night time economy in the town centre as well as bringing greater vibrancy to day time trade.

Sean McVeigh, asset manager from landlords F&C REIT said: “This multimillion pound investment will bring a much needed leisure hub to Barnsley and confirms our belief and commitment to the town centre.

“We are pleased to be working with Barnsley Council to ensure the delivery of a leisure destination which will not just be for the local people of Barnsley but also for the people from the surrounding area which will also benefit the local economy.

“The new development is estimated to bring 230 new jobs to the town and will add it to the Barnsley offering.”

“It is a really exciting time for the centre with great interest in retail lettings too” said John Tarrant, centre manager “the local community has really got behind our latest plans and it is good to see support from Barnsley Council who can see the economic benefits to the area”.

The multimillion pound development follows the recent installation of a new double storey glazed entrance on Cheapside which has helped to enhance this part of the town centre.
