Work on new Darlington multi-storey car park to start

Work on Darlington town centre’s new multi-storey car park will get underway today (Monday, 19 January).

The car park, which will provide 650 new parking spaces is due to open towards the end of the year.

It will be built on the current Beaumont Street car park which will close on to allow works to start on site.

At the same time, the short stay car park behind the Town Hall (Feethams car park) re-opens to the public following completion of the new Department for Education building, and will be available until the new multi-storey car park opens.

Data gathered by Darlington Borough Council has revealed that car parking ticket sales in the busy run up to Christmas 2014 were up 5% on the same period the year before.

At the same time there was an increase in footfall in the town of 1.5% compared to last year.

Leader of Darlington Council, Councillor Bill Dixon, said: “I am pleased to announce that the next step towards improving the parking offer in the centre of Darlington is about to get underway.

“The new car park will provide modern high quality parking very close to the town centre and the new Cinema when it is complete.

“The car park will be pay on exit, taking away the worry many driver s have that they need to return to the car at a set time.”

“A number of people raised concerns about the road works designed to improve the flow of traffic around the town and the potential impact on trade in the run up to Christmas.

“I am pleased to see the evidence that suggests that some of those fears were unfounded. The combined efforts of the Town Centre businesses, the Council and Distinct Darlington helped boost trade in the run up to Christmas, and by working together we will ensure our Town Centre continues to thrive.”
