311 jobs to go as Yorkshire stores axed as part of Tesco cost-cutting drive

Tesco has announced the names of 43 stores, including several in the Yorkshire and Humber region that are set to close, with 311 job losses.

Stores in Yorkshire affected include Express stores at Sheffield Manor, Crossgates, Mexborough, as well as the superstore in Doncaster.

In total, 18 Express, 12 Metro, seven superstores and six Homeplus stores are shutting their doors, in a move that will see 2,000 people lose their jobs.

According to the BBC, the firm is also shelving plans to open a further 49 new “very large” stores, closing its staff pension scheme, will make cuts of £250 million, and reduce overheads by 30%.

It comes after two years of troubles at Tesco, which has suffered falling sales and profit warnings.

Despite this, sales over the Christmas 2014 period were down just 0.3% on the year before, and up 0.1% if fuel sales are included.

Tesco’s chief executive, Dave Lewis, said at the time of the announcement the firm was “facing the reality of the situation” and was “seeing the benefits of listening to our customers”.
