CNC Machining apprentices join leading Northumberland engineering company

PHC (Precision Hydraulic Cylinders) specialises in the supply of hydraulic cylinders to many of the leading global OEMs in the lift-truck, material handling and mobile equipment markets. For several years they have invested heavily in engineering apprentices in maintenance and machining.

2014 was no different. In April PHC committed to recruiting 2 machining apprentices. After Tyne North Training had gone through a thorough process of advertising though the National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) website and several activities within local Northumberland schools a shortlist of suitable candidates was identified. A thorough vetting process followed which included testing in English and Maths, a practical test which included engineering reasoning and finally a thorough interview activity which included several discipline specific Training Officers from Tyne North Training.

After a shortlist of suitable candidates was submitted, PHC then started their thorough interview process which included interview and factory tour. Two apprentices were recruited; Jordan McMullen and Kyle Hackett. Both have started their apprenticeship and will start by attending Tyne Met College where they will gain a thorough understanding of hand fitting, turning and milling.

Davey Collins was absolutely delighted with the decision to recruit Jordan and Kyle. “They will make great machining apprentices. From what I have heard already from the college they are already learning so much about the manual processes of machining. I have no doubts that when they return to the workplace next February they will be able to move onto the complex CNC machines with ease.”
