Contractor gears up for £10 million Leeds Bradford Cycle Superhighway

Civil engineering contractor North Midland Construction PLC (NM Group) has been appointed by Leeds City Council the Leeds Bradford Cycle Superhighway scheme, which is valued at nearly £10 million.

The project will see the construction of largely segregated cycle tracks and off-carriageway crossings at signal controlled junctions.

The council hopes to see an increase in the popularity of cycling, including city centre commuting, and sees the new cycle route as a key legacy proposal, capturing long term benefits for the region in terms of health, access and recreation.

James Lewis, chair of West Yorkshire Transport Committee, said “I’m delighted that we will see work starting on our first cycle superhighway so soon.

“I know there’s a huge appetite for cycling and this is an important step in creating new infrastructure.

“It falls alongside the work we are doing with cycling groups to entice more people onto their bikes so it’s great news.”

The cycle superhighway route is approximately 12km in length and includes a segregated cycle track between Bradford and the east side of Leeds, through a predominantly urban location.

Geoff Poyzer, managing director of the Highways and Utilities Division of NM Group, said: “This is a highly prestigious project which will provide many benefits to the region in terms of health and access to leisure. “

“We are delighted to be involved in a scheme which has been inspired by the tremendous success of the Tour de France and we are confident the cycle superhighway will provide significant benefits to existing cycling enthusiasts and those who have been encouraged to take it up – whether as a hobby or as a means of commuting.”
