Sydney coming to Liverpool Waterfront Forum 2015

Sydney is the first partner city to be announced as guest speaker at Liverpool International Waterfront Forum 2015. The LIWF makes a welcome return after its inaugural event took place as part of the UK government backed International Festival for Business 2014.

Liverpool International Waterfront Forum 2015 is a global platform for waterfront cities to come together to discuss common themes and build strong international alliance. The concept for the forum, which was created in a partnership between Liverpool Waterfront Business Partnership and international consultancy Arup, will this year be hosted at the Cunard Building on Liverpool’s iconic Pier Head, on June 3 and 4, 2015.

LIWF provides vital understanding of the common themes that are shared by waterfront cities across the globe and the waterfront asset can be used to focus economic growth, attract inward investment and improved lifestyle of a waterfront city. The topic for discussion at the LIWF 2015 will be exploring the role of culture and place making as tools for fostering growth of waterfront cities.

Barangaroo South is Sydney’s largest urban renewal project since the 2000 Olympics and one of the most significant waterfront transformations currently underway anywhere in the world. The development turns this former container wharf into a vibrant new waterfront financial district, with a mix of world-class office space, premium residential buildings, as well as shopping, dining, hotel, hospitality and public places.

Anita Mitchell, general manager sustainability for Lendlease, will represent the $6 billion Barangaroo South waterfront urban renewal project. Anita is one of Australia’s most experienced sustainability practitioners, an environmental scientist with 20 years of sustainability experience spanning the energy, water, waste, property and construction sectors.

She has had responsibility for the sustainability strategies of some of Australia’s largest organisations including Integral Energy, Sydney Water, WSN Environmental Solutions, Bovis Lend Lease and Jones Lang LaSalle.

Max Steinberg, chair of Liverpool International Waterfront Forum Steering Group, said:

“As with the inaugural event during IFB 2014, the objective for LIWF is to place Liverpool at the heart of the global waterfront cities agenda, sharing learning from global partner cities. In an increasingly competitive world we are harnessing our waterfront asset to drive growth in the Liverpool City Region and the wider North West.

“We are delighted that we can welcome Anita Mitchell to tell us about one of the most significant waterfront transformations currently underway anywhere in the world. I predict interest in the forum will continue to grow and that next year’s installment will be a key event in the calendar for IFB 2016.”

Sue Grindrod, chair of Liverpool Waterfront Business Partnership, added:

“It is so exciting to see an event that was developed in support of IFB in 2014 has resonated in the international waterfront business communities. I am looking forward to welcoming delegations from UK and international waterfront cities, to debate the role of culture and place making in bringing about true regeneration in a waterfront setting.”

LIWF is supported by Liverpool Waterfront Business Partnership and Arup, while law firm, Winckworth Sherwood and Titanic Hotel Liverpool are official sponsors of the event.
