3rd generation apprentice starts at Ryton steel fabricator

Ormston Fabrication, located near Ryton has taken on a 3rd generation apprentice. Last summer, Paul Ormston, MD of Ormston Fabrication contacted Tyne North Training to explore the possibility of recruiting his grandson through the apprenticeship programme. Having completed his own apprenticeship in the 1970’s and seen his son-in-law Jonathan successfully progress through his apprenticeship in the 1990’s, Paul was keen to see his grandson Bailey follow the same career path.

Bailey, who attended Thorp Academy in Ryton, left school last Summer. He was subsequently interviewed and tested by Tyne North Training to ensure that he was suited to a fabrication and welding apprenticeship. As expected, Bailey impressed so much that Tyne North Training had no hesitation in managing his apprenticeship. Ormston Fabrication and Tyne North Training developed a programme where Bailey could attend college to start his practical training and his technical certificate, but also make provision for Bailey to start in the workplace from September.

Tyne North Traininh now send Bailey to Derwentside College for 2 days per week which allows him to work for 3 days with his father and grandfather in the workplace. Already, he is proving himself as a valuable asset.

Paul commented “The Gateshead and Derwentside area is really starting to take off when it comes to recruiting engineering apprentices. I am glad that local schools are now informing school leavers that there are alternative routes other than just A levels and college. The fact that my company’s apprentice is my grandson is just the icing on the cake.”
