First self-build plots set to be constructed at Newcastle Great Park

Work is about to commence on the first self-build plots to be built at Newcastle Great Park.

Charles Church North East has put the spotlight on its development as a quarter of its self-build plots are sold to buyers wanting to build their own home.

The developer last year welcomed comments from planning minister Nick Boles who said he saw self build as an affordable way for people to create their perfect home.

Mr Boles’ comments came as he discussed the Government’s Right to Build scheme during Grand Designs Live. A £150 million fund has been earmarked to help kick-start a wave of self-build across the country.

John Eynon, deputy managing director for Charles Church North East, said: “We believe there is a growing demand for people to build their own homes, not just as a cost-effective way of owning their own home but as a means of living in their dream home.

“Self build can appeal to a wide cross-section of people including youngsters priced out of the first-time buyers’ market, people wanting a family home that is not just perfect for toddlers but for teenagers as well, and couples wanting to retire to the home of their dreams.”

The self-build plots come in five different sizes to suit various budgets with all the essential work carried out, providing road access to all plots, foul and surface water drainage and utilities such as water, gas, electricity and telecommunications.

John added: “People have the freedom to design and construct their own home, which can be up to three storeys high, whilst still working within a design framework. And while the framework encourages high quality architectural design and protects the visual amenity of the site, it won’t inhibit their innovation and individuality.

“The 39 serviced self-build plots are the result of an inspiring initiative by Newcastle City Council. It seems we are leading the way up north when it comes to individuality and meeting people’s desires to create the perfect home.”
