Do you give a toss about your energy supplies? Recycle oil this Pancake Day

It is estimated that across Britain, the average person consumes two pancakes on Shrove Tuesday equating to 117 million pancakes being made on one day of the year.

An astonishing 52 million eggs, 13 million kilos of flour and 93 Olympic sized pools worth of milk are used to meet the needs of Pancake Day.

In order to transform these ingredients into a delicious pancake, millions of litres of cooking oil are also used. When the pancake fun is over, this oil is often poured down kitchen sinks having major repercussions on drainage and sewer systems.

Used cooking oil poured down drains solidifies causing major blockages often known as fatbergs and costing the UK £15 million a year in removal costs.

What many home owners fail to realise is that they are responsible for fatberg removal costs if a blockage is within the boundaries of their home. Last year, Thames Water billed over £50 million to households across London for drainage unblocking.

Rather than disposing of oil down the drain, it can be collected to help power thousands of UK homes.

Living Fuels, working in partnership with local councils and waste contractors across the UK, operates a scheme which recovers used cooking oil into an environmentally-friendly bioliquid used to generate clean electricity for the National Grid.

Ian Collins, managing director for Living Fuels says, “With Shrove Tuesday approaching, we are urging families to be responsible with their cooking oil and drop it off at one of our 500 waste cooking oil tanks.

“As enjoyable as Pancake Day is, it is not worth pouring oil down the sink and running the risk of receiving a huge bill, especially when 80 per cent of the UK population is within 15 minutes of a collection point.

“Not only are you potentially saving yourself money, you are also helping to power our UK homes with Government supported, eco-friendly energy. A little oil goes a long way. Just one litre of oil, provides enough energy to make 240 cups of tea.”
