McCarthy’s invests £2 million in "biggest ever" Wakefield centre

McCarthy’s Removals and Storage is investing £2 million in its largest ever self storage centre in the centre of Wakefield.

The company has bought the former Magnet kitchen showroom and John Peters furniture store on Kirkgate which will become McCarthy’s Storage World Wakefield.

McCarthy’s, which has been running for over 40 years, already has self storage facilities in Leeds and Harrogate.

The 21,000 sq ft building is currently undergoing a total renovation and refit, and is expected to be open for business by Easter. At least six new jobs will be created.

The storage facility will provide 500 storage units of varying dimensions, from the size of a phone box to a tennis court. It will cater for both business and personal customers

Mike McCarthy, managing director of McCarthy’s Removals and Storage, said: “We already have a strong customer base in the Wakefield area for the removals side of the business, but we were very aware that there were no easily accessible storage facilities within the city.

“The two services often complement each other, and so we have been looking for suitable premises to invest in within the area for some time.

“The Kirkgate building is ideal. It’s on a main road in a great location, and will be easily accessible for most people. It’s walking distance from the city centre but we will also have lots of free parking.”

Trading since 1970, McCarthy’s is a family business primarily known for its private and commercial removals and storage services.

Operating across Yorkshire, its head office is based on Meanwood Road, Leeds, and the company also has a 300-room self storage facility for homeowners and businesses in Harrogate.
