Newcastle holiday lettings agency reports dramatic year on year increase in business

A Newcastle holiday letting agency has reported a dramatic, year on year increase in business.

Cottages in Northumberland, which rents out over 130 coastal, countryside and city properties in the county and across Tyneside, saw a 20% surge in lettings last month.

While January is historically one of the Newcastle-based company’s busiest months, bosses believe this dramatic upturn is a solid indicator of growing public confidence in the British economy.

“Interestingly, while bookings are up across the board, the greatest demand has been for our more expensive holiday properties,” said Cottages in Northumberland manager, Angela Mazingham.

“Our six and seven bedroom properties were among the first to be snapped up, but the demand has been strong across all property types and all areas of the region – from Newcastle city centre apartments to cottages in the country.

“And although a high percentage of our lettings are always from UK residents the number of visitors from abroad is also on the increase.”

In the first six months of last year the North East saw its highest number of visitors for five years, with overseas tourists spending £88m in the region.

The North East welcomed 222,000 visitors from abroad between January and June 2014, showing an uplift of 25% on the same six months of 2013.

Spending also rose by 25% over the same period with people from Germany, Ireland and the Netherlands the most likely to visit.

Angela added: “We have found that the reasons visitors come to the North East region vary just as much as the places they come from.

“We have helped people looking for accommodation who are here for long term business reasons who want their spouses, children and even the family dog to come too, others who might be on secondment from another country, specialist medical consultants from abroad or actors touring in a play in our local theatres.

“Whatever the need, we are always happy to find a property to suit their requirements.”
