Morgan Sindall hands over Castleford Bus Station

Construction and infrastructure company Morgan Sindall has completed and handed over the new £6 million bus station in Castleford, West Yorkshire.

Having opened on Sunday 22 February, in time for the Monday peak period, the new Castleford Bus Station will provide the 12,000 people who use bus services every day with a more comfortable waiting environment, better information and improved facilities. It has been developed to support the regeneration and growth of Castleford and the Five Towns area and forms an impressive new gateway to the town.

In addition to a covered waiting concourse, the new bus station features 24-hour monitored CCTV coverage, electronic departure information, passenger help points and space for a retail outlet.

Unveiling a plaque to mark the opening, Cllr Peter Box, Chair of West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Leader of Wakefield Council, said: “Castleford Bus Station is the first of many major transport projects to be completed under the West Yorkshire Combined Authority banner.”

Dave Smith, managing director of Morgan Sindall’s business in the north, said: “This project will make a real difference to people’s lives and help to reinvigorate Castleford town centre in the process.

“We’ve handed this building back on schedule and on budget and are gratified that the customer is as pleased with the end result as we are.”

Funded in partnership with Wakefield Council, overwhelming support was received for the bus station at public exhibitions and consultation events. The old Albion street bus station closed at the end of January 2013and construction started in March 2014.

In line with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s commitment to developing an improved transport network, two other major transport projects are progressing in the Wakefield District. Work is underway on the Pontefract Northern Link Road and Wakefield Eastern Relief Road, which are both being delivered through the West Yorkshire plus Transport Fund designed to supporting growth and job creation and unlock housing development through better transport infrastructure.
