Plans for Picadilly Circus-style screens in Brixton rejected after public objection
Plan to turn Brixton into the “new Piccadilly Circus” have been rejected by Lambeth Council, after hundreds of locals objected to the erection of large advertising screens in the town centre.
Zeo Holdings submitted plans with the council to install the ten LED boards on a locally-listed 1930s building opposite the Ritzy Cinema.
In a statement, Zeo said: “Piccadilly Circus is known across the globe as one of the places to visit within London attracting people and stimulating the economy.
“This application would have a similar effect on Brixton and would benefit traders, businesses and those who frequent the town centre.”
According to the Evening Standard, the application has now been rejected by the council after more than 600 people wrote to the council to object.
Matt Parr, a Labour councillor, said: “The proposed signs would dominate the centre of Brixton to a ridiculous degree. It is out of keeping with the character of Brixton and would generate no compensating community benefit.”
