MBNA’s super fundraisers raise £61,000 for Clatterbridge

A team at Chester-based credit card lender MBNA has raised a staggering £61,000 for The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity with a series of stunts and events taking place over the last four years.

Members of the Customer Advocates Office (CAO) – who act on behalf of MBNA customers to ensure they are receiving the best possible service and that vulnerable customers are identified and protected – elected to retain Clatterbridge as their ‘Charity of the Year’ four years running and threw themselves into fundraising.

Challenges included a sponsored sky dive and a trek scaling the Three Peaks of Yorkshire, while singing Santas, cake sales, tuck shops, interdepartmental sporting events and the gunging of managers all boosted the final tally. Just under £23,600 of the total amount was raised in 2014 alone.

Sean Humphreys, Change Legacy and Business Support Executive at MBNA, said: “Clatterbridge is a great cause and a charity that means so much to so many people. There is a huge sense of pride in the CAO department that we have been able to raise such a significant sum to help towards the comfort and treatments available at the hospital.”

The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity is renowned for its pioneering cancer treatments and has nine operating sites across Cheshire and Merseyside.

Jade Barrett, Area Fundraising Manager at The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, visited MBNA recently and gave a presentation to the team showing how the money they raised has been used.

Jade said: “On behalf of everybody at Clatterbridge, we are so unbelievably grateful to everybody at MBNA for their incredible support. From the annual walk, to the allotment they built, and the tireless fundraising efforts of the CAO department – the staff gave up their volunteering hours and spare time to raise money for Clatterbridge cancer patients and their families.

“The money donated has been used to pay for equipment such as thermoplastic masks to help treat patients with head or neck cancer and gold seed markers used in radiotherapy to help treat prostate cancer with extra precision.

“Due to the amount raised, we’ve also been able to fund days out for teenage cancer patients and provide free wigs for patients experiencing hair loss. Over £61,000 has been raised since we became friends five years ago. It’s been an incredible journey and the team at MBNA has so much more in the pipeline. I just can’t thank them enough, they are a truly fantastic bunch of people.”

Following the visit, staff at Clatterbridge posted a selfie to thank the MBNA team for all their fundraising efforts, which was picked by the Chester Chronicle and local radio stations Dee 106.3 and Heart FM. The image quickly went viral, being seen by just under 5,700 people and generating more than 360 interactions on Facebook.
