Oriental grocer makes charity donation

The UK’s leading Oriental grocer, which has its headquarters in Birmingham, has donated £1,000 to the Border Collie Trust as part of its celebrations for the Chinese New Year.

Wing Yip, which has its HQ and a superstore in Nechells, decided to make the donation to mark the New Year on February 19 and the start of the Year of the Sheep.

Ben Wilkes, from the Border Collie Trust GB, took along two collies for the presentation and met the company’s founder and chairman W.Wing Yip.

Mr Yip said: “Celebrating the Chinese New Year is a great occasion for us and a very important moment on our social and business calendar.

“It is also important for us to support our community and making a donation to the trust seemed a perfect way to combine the two. The work they do is very impressive.”

Ben Wilkes, a Trustee for the Border Collie Trust, said: “The Border Collie Trust is very grateful to our business community for the support they offer towards our work, rescuing and rehoming Border Collies throughout the UK.

“As all our funding comes from donations and our own fundraising, the generous donation from Wing Yip, commemorating The Year of the Sheep, will be a valuable contribution towards our annual veterinary costs which are in the region of at least £12,000.

“The Trust tries to find each dog we care for a suitable home. There are no time limits and some dogs stay with us for months. We also operate a ‘Sponsor a Dog’ scheme which enables us to take a few older dogs and give them a home for life, as generally few people want to take in an elderly collie.”

Mr Yip added: “It was wonderful to meet Ben and hear about all the work that they do. They are certainly fulfilling a need and we are very happy to support them by making this donation.”

The company now operates from more than 16 acres at its four sites in Birmingham, Manchester, Cricklewood and Croydon and stocks more than 4,500 oriental items.

The Nechells site also includes a 30,000 sq ft warehouse, as well as the existing business centre, a restaurant and the Bank of East Asia. Wing Yip now supplies more than 2,000 Chinese restaurants throughout the UK.
