Top Tips for Travelling with Children

Here are some top tips to help take the hassle out of travelling with children…

Travelling By Flight:

When flying with young children you need to be well prepared. It can be stressful for you and irritating for other passengers when your children whinge on a plane! A little planning beforehand and putting the effort in to entertain your little ones during flights will pay off. Always pack plenty of drinks, snacks and something to keep the boredom at bay like crayons, paper, books, iPods and iPads. Remember to pack headphones for the inflight movie or a portable DVD player so they can enjoy their favourite film. If your child has never travelled by aeroplane packing Calpol is a good idea in case they get earache on the plane.

Important Advice:

If it’s an early morning flight make sure your child has an early night before you travel or why not book a night flight so they sleep. Keep them awake all day and have them running around to tire them out before you travel, then they will sleep all the way on the plane. Packing their own pillows helps them snuggle up and sleep better. Short flights are advisable as any more than about 3 hours and kids become a nightmare!

Tips for Parents:

As a parent you may already possess the art of distraction, if your children are getting restless and fidgety use it. Play games like I-spy, word games, read a book with them or for those who are really keen why not create a quiz in advance of the journey with a prize at the end. It’ll keep them amused the whole way. Most of all pack your patience!!

Children Essentials:

It is essential to be safe in the sun so make sure that you pack plenty of high factor sun cream for your little ones. Why not attach your phone number and name of hotel on your child’s wrist in case you are separated from them, this can happen so easily on a crowded beach. A whacky idea is to dress your whole family in the same colour for the day making it easier to spot each other! Be clear in your instructions to your children using short sentences and get them to repeat them back to you to show they have understood e.g. “Make sure you can always see mummy.” Children love to experience the world through touch and will touch things you don’t want them to. Always have a pack of wet wipes handy to keep their little hands clean. The last thing you want on your holiday is sickness or worse!

So planning and patience are the key when travelling with children; if they are happy you’ll have a happy holiday!
