Dougie Mac in Line for Top Medical Award
Douglas Macmillan Hospice under the guidance of Dr. Claire Hookey, have been short listed for a top national medical award.
The team is one of five in the Palliative Care category of the British Medical Journal Awards for their work to reduce the burden of suffering patients with life limiting illnesses through relief of symptoms.
The BMJ Awards are the UK’s premier medical awards programme that recognise and celebrate the inspirational work done by doctors and their teams.
Dr. Claire Hookey said;
“We have developed the ability to perform scans at the Hospice for the fluid which may build up in the abdomen of people with cancer or heart failure.
“Previously, this treatment could only be done in the hospital.
“When fluid is confirmed, this can be drained, now at the Hospice. I am delighted that the team here has been shortlisted for this prestigious National Award, which recognises one aspect of the innovative work that we have been undertaking here at the Dougie Mac.”
Sue Hills, from Madeley is a current patient who visits the Day Therapy Unit at the Hospice.
Sue added;
“I now have access to this new draining system every 3 weeks. Prior to this, I attended the local hospital but in the beginning, the staff there could not give me a set time of when my draining could take place.
“On several occasions, when I needed to access the care, there was nobody available for me or I was told to return at a later date.
“Now I am able to use this facility at Douglas Macmillan Hospice on a regular basis when I require the care, and it comes with far less stress and in the knowledge that I know for certain that when I need to use this facility, I can.”
A total of 60 entries have been shortlisted in 12 categories and the winners of each category will be announced at a Gala Dinner in London at the beginning of May.
