Hammerson announces steel arrival milestone at Victoria Gate

Hammerson, the developer behind the £150m Victoria Gate scheme, has reached a further construction milestone, as demolition works on the Millgarth Police Station have now been completed and construction of the Victoria Gate arcade has begun.

Earlier this month, the first steel delivery arrived on site and work has commenced to construct the steel structure.

The first phase of the steel work, which is well underway, will put in place a frame that will form the basis for the facade of the Victoria Gate arcade. Over the next few months, the steel diagrid frame for John Lewis’ building will also be erected. With over 150 people now working on the site, all steel work is due to finish by summer.

The construction activity at Victoria Gate, which is set to ramp up ahead of the opening to the public in late 2016, forms part of Deloitte’s latest Crane Survey of Leeds. The survey highlights the overall increase in development and notes the positive recovery of the city’s commercial property schemes.

Nick Fay, Project Manager at Hammerson, said: “Steel arrival on site marks another important milestone for the Victoria Gate development, as it represents commencement of the super-structure erection for the Victoria Gate arcade. This is a busy and exciting time for the project and our two new web cameras provide a great way for everyone to watch the scheme come to life.”

Angela Barnicle, Director and Head of Real Estate for Deloitte in Yorkshire, said: “Some commercial property developers continue to be cautious, but we expect to see sentiment strengthen further this year, and some of the previously announced schemes in the city will start to take shape.”
