Hull graduates and students roll up their sleeves

As part of the Up-Skilling Yorkshire campaign, Young Guns -graduates, trainees and apprentices - from local housebuilder, Barratt Homes, have delivered innovative careers advice to students at Malet Lambert School in Hull. The careers advice sees the local students benefit from hands on experience in the world of construction, in a bid to bridge the local skills gap. Showcasing every stage of the housebuilding process, in efforts to promote the industry and its various career options to college students across the region, Barratt Homes’ team of Young Guns helped the local students gain the confidence and insight to consider a new career option. The team from Barratt Homes developed a game to help deliver the careers advice, which saw the students buying land, pricing all elements of construction, building the property, all the way through to financial analysis and final sale of the completed property – as well as a live brick laying demonstration from an apprentice builder.

Clare Reaney, Sales Manager at Barratt Homes, commented: “This is one of many local initiatives we are rolling out across the county to help showcase the construction industry to youngsters. The Young Gun team are doing a great job of raising awareness about the opportunities available in construction – not least by showcasing this fantastic and innovative game within the local school.”

Claire Shaw, Business Champion at Malet Lambert School, commented: “We are delighted that Barratt Homes has visited our school and helped to showcase the different career options available to our students. When local businesses show our students an insight into the world of work, we find it has a really positive impact on both their confidence and aspirations for the future.”

Barratt Homes has three sites across Hull, including its Liberty Green, The Sidings and Aspire developments. For further information on Barratt Homes please visit www.barratthomes.co.uk.
