British Science Week comes to Leeds

DePuy Synthes offers a series of events to mark British Science Week

The Leeds based team of the global medical device manufacturers, DePuy Synthes, is running a special programme of events to support British Science Week 2015 (13th – 22nd March), a nationwide celebration of the best of British Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths programming, known as STEM.

Saturday 14th March saw the company join forces with Leeds based Thackray Medical Museum, one of the UK’s largest medical museums, and FabLab Airedale, a digital fabrication workshop, to jointly host the first of three workshops at the museum.

The workshops allow visitors to learn about the ways in which technology is making advancements in medical care. With the support of engineers from the FabLab, visitors can design a prosthetic limb for a dog, try their hand at laser cutting and even see how 3D printing has been used to create an artificial foot for an injured duck in the USA.

Additional hands-on workshops will run at the museum on Saturday 21st and 28th March between 11am-3pm.

Complementing the workshop, DePuy Synthes engineers will host STEM talks for visiting secondary schools to the Thackray Medical Museum during British Science Week.

“Our team of engineers here in Leeds run an active STEM programme of events throughout the year,” said Mike Barker, Worldwide Vice President R&D at DePuy Synthes. “British Science Week is an ideal opportunity for us to collaborate with other local organisations to engage with young adults in a fun and informative way, while promoting careers in science, technology, engineering and maths.”

In addition, DePuy Synthes engineers will host a hands-on science fair at the Hugh Gaitskell Primary School in Beeston for younger students. During the fair student science projects will be highlighted and judged, encouraging children to explore the world of science and technology.
