Hammerson secures planning approval to transform vacant Cramlington library site
Hammerson, the British property development and investment company, has received planning approval from Northumberland County Council for its plans to create a new scheme on the disused Library site in Forum Way, Cramlington.
The decision, given at the council planning committee on Tuesday (17 March 2015), marks an important milestone in the redevelopment process which aims to transform the former Cramlington library site into a purpose-built 20,000 sq. ft. space suitable for retail or leisure use.
Colin Farrow, assistant director of retail parks at Hammerson, commented: “The decision from Northumberland County Council is a positive initial step in bringing forward the redevelopment. We believe that the proposed new purpose-built unit in Cramlington town centre will provide valuable space for a retailer or leisure operator, whilst also complementing the ongoing improvement of Manor Walks.”
Hammerson’s proposed plans to develop the site adjacent to Manor Walks reinforces its ongoing commitment to enhancing the local economy by helping to provide much-needed new jobs as well as ensuring Cramlington is a vibrant, healthy and sustainable community.
In addition to transforming the vacant site, which has remained empty since the library relocated in May 2013, the proposed plans also take into consideration access, parking and landscaping.
