Malawi disaster recovery plan aided by Elitetele.com donation
Elitetele.com provides technology to help volunteers collect critical data
Extensive damage caused by heavy rainfall last December in South Malawi has resulted in 230,000 people across 15 districts being evacuated to temporary sites. All Hands Volunteers and the Malawi Red Cross need mobile devices to create a system to gather data from camps in a bid to direct much needed aid to the most affected places and Elitetele.com has donated 15 Samsung Android phones to help kick-start the data collection efforts.
Gary Pitts, DART Team member at All Hands Volunteers comments, “The media haven’t reported much about this disaster, so it’s been difficult for aid agencies like us to secure funding. It’s a heart breaking situation and we are in desperate need of support.”
All Hands Volunteers (a US based NGO) and the Malawi Red Cross, working under the UN Shelter cluster, will gather data with the help of technology to allow local enumerators to communicate in real-time back to coordinators, who can liaise with aid agencies to direct relief goods to the people in greatest need.
Matt Newing, CEO, Elitetele.com comments, “The damage caused by the flooding in Malawi is truly devastating and we are happy to provide help to relief efforts by All Hands Volunteers and the Malawi Red Cross. In order to prioritise the delivery of aid, it’s essential to gather and use data effectively. The devices we are providing will we hope help aid the recovery operation.”
