Work starts on Wirral Lightbox scheme

Work is underway on Capital and Centric’s ‘Lightbox’ office and accommodation project in Birkenhead.

The Manchester-based property development firm has appointed Barnfield Construction to deliver the 20,500 sq ft scheme, within a six-month build period. Work is due for completion in late summer this year.

Capital & Centric purchased the site from Wirral Council in December 2014 following a development competition.

The six units, designed to be ‘super energy efficient’, are being marketed towards small-to-medium sized enterprises within the offshore wind sector.

The Regional Growth Fund provided gap funding which supported the creation of up to 75 jobs at the facility.

Michelle Rothwell, development manager at Capital & Centric, said: “We’re now on site with our third new scheme in 2015, and our sixth live construction site which takes Capital & Centric’s construction spend to £1 million a week.

“The uniquely designed units are also super energy efficient. The scheme includes transparent roof panels meaning that no internal lighting will be required during the day which will create huge savings to tenant running costs.”

Wirral firm Smith & Sons and CBRE have been appointed to market the units.

Sean Seery from Smith and Sons said: “The Lightbox is a fantastic development. Its clever design, flexible floor area and modern aesthetics offer a welcome and different addition to Wirral’s commercial property market”.
