BAM Construction secure Bradford NHS Trust £20m contract

Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has awarded BAM Construction a contract worth £20m to build a new state of the art wing and access link.

The proposed development, designed by Leeds-based Bowman Riley Architects, consists of a new three storey ward block, as well as a new accessible link to Smith Lane, a new Critical Care Unit, car parking and roadways for the hospital.

Included within the three stories will be new paediatric and elderly patient wards, retail and refreshments facilities, along with revamped access points around the hospital. Throughout the build there will be a focus on managing dust and noise control because the location of the new project is located around other operational facilities.

BAM expect to begin working on the site in Spring and are aiming to complete the project in Autumn 2016. Matthew Garnett, who oversaw the rebuild of Wharfedale Hospital as well as the remodelling of the live University of Hull Brynmor Jones library, has been appointed as Project Manager by the construction firm.

Paul Cleminson, the project director of BAM, said: “The critical factor for any construction scheme is the ability to work collaboratively. In a live hospital environment, this is so important. Our engagement with the client will be enhanced by our market leading use of BIM technology.

“Our experience of complex health schemes for the NHS includes delivering multiple projects during a long term relationship at Sheffield. BAM is also currently engaged delivering healthcare facilities in Liverpool, London, Scotland, Wales, and Somerset.

“We’ve got a strong local supply chain and already this means the mechanical and electrical modules for the project will be made in Bradford. Local employment initiatives will provide apprentice opportunities allowing the scheme to provide career and learning opportunities for local people.”

Paul Featherstone, the Trust’s director of estates and facilities, said: “Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is committed to providing top quality health care for the people of Bradford. An important supporting aspect of this is the provision of modern, best in class facilities that actively support the delivery of excellent clinical services.

“The Trust is delighted to appoint BAM Construction Limited as its construction partner. This will be a true landmark building for the Trust, and we are looking forward to working with BAM and drawing on their considerable NHS and wider construction experience. The Trust is confident that through BAM’s attention to detail, meticulous planning and programming, and robust cost control that successful delivery of the project will be achieved.”
