Young engineers speak out for engineering

Sheffield celebrates young engineers at awards ceremony

A prestigious annual competition for young engineers testing their presentation skills was bought to a close with a glamorous awards ceremony at Sheffield’s Cutlers’ Hall earlier this month, with Mechanical Engineer William Holloway taking the prestigious accolade following a talk on innovation in industrial wastewater.

The Institute of Mechanical Engineer’s (IMechE) ‘Speak Out for Engineering’ competition, which is in its 51st year, sees entrants from across the region showcase their knowledge for mechanical engineering in a presentation that can be understood by those not necessarily in the engineering world.

This year’s event, sponsored by Yorkshire based Elevation Recruitment’s specialist engineering division, saw representatives from Yorkshire battle it out at the final which took place at the Cutlers’ Hall in Sheffield.

The black-tie awards evening happened last weekend, winner William received The Philip Hilton Trophy and a cash prize, after his talk on the design of hydroelectric generators for use in industrial wastewater. The trophy is named in memory of Philip Hilton, as IMechE wants him to be remembered for his great deeds in promoting engineering.

The competition was organised by the Institute of Mechanical Engineer’s Volunteer Network was first established in 1964. Even though it has evolved and adapted over time, the key message is still to challenge young engineers and to test their ability to communicate effectively.

The competitors conducted a presentation on a subject relating to mechanical engineering which was followed by questions and discussion from the panel of judge - which includes Elevation Recruitments own Senior Director John Bohan.

John Bohan, Senior Director at Elevation said: “It’s great to be involved with competitions that challenge the future leaders of the industry and celebrate successes.

“Elevation are proud to support this event as it not only allows young engineers to test their skills and gain confidence for their future roles but also provides a platform for the industry to showcase talent.”
