Birkenhead-based Flynn Refrigeration completes major upgrade on nuclear cargo carrier

Merseyside-based Flynn Refrigeration has delivered major improvements to the refrigeration and air-conditioning system onboard a vessel used to transport specialist nuclear materials around the world.

Working under contract to ship managers, Serco, the Birkenhead firm has completed the retrofit and conversion project on International Nuclear Services’ (INS) MV Oceanic Pintail.

The extensive refrigeration and air conditioning work took 18 months to complete onboard the vessel.

Managing director Alex Flynn, said: “The project was carried out in Barrow, Cumbria, and was part of a wide scale upgrade of the vessel.

“Our services included the conversion of the Lighfoot cargo refrigeration system.

“We retrofitted the entire system using Du-Pont ISECON R417A refrigerant.

“We also replaced the air handling system supply and installed new refrigeration and air conditioning equipment in areas including the control room.

“We further carried out the replacement of all air compressors and serviced all the cargo hold fans.

“The work needed to be delivered with speed and efficiency to integrate with the broader upgrade plan.

“It also required a high-level of skill, precision and safety planning due to the nature of the vessel.

“The project also helps to demonstrate our full range of disciplines from vessel surveying, product sourcing and supply, repair and installation work. Essentially, we are a one-stop-shop for refrigeration and air conditioning systems.”

MV Oceanic Pintail has carried nuclear material globally for 27 years.

Flynn Refrigeration is carrying out maintenance surveys on other INS vessels managed by Serco too, including the Pacific Egret and Pacific Heron, and planning work on a new ship due in 2018.

Flynn Refrigeration was founded in 2006.

Its turnover stands at £2.6m rising from £2m in 2013.
