Calder Valley MP Backs Brighouse Dentist’s Campaign

Under 18s In The Valley To Receive Free Dental Treatment

Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Calder Valley Craig Whittaker has backed the Fresh Smile Clinic’s campaign to take child tooth decay head on after figures revealed the shocking state of dental health amongst many of the UK’s children.

Speaking at a visit to the practice, MP Craig Whittaker has said he’s extremely worried about high levels of tooth decay and has praised the Fresh Smile’s offer to give children and young people under the age of 18 in Calder Valley free treatment.

A new survey has reported that over a half of 12-year-old children have high levels of tooth decay in the UK, and because levels are so high, our kids are telling us that it’s getting them down and affecting their confidence.

Nearly half of eight-year-olds and a third of five-year-olds have signs of decay in their milk teeth and the 2013 Children’s Dental Health Survey for England, Wales, and Northern Ireland also found that 46% of 15-year-olds had decay in their teeth.

Craig Whittaker, who is bidding to become MP for Calder Valley for another successful term, said: “The fact that a large number of children don’t feel comfortable smiling and laughing because of the state of their teeth is very sad and it’s great to see one of our established dentists is taking the issue seriously and offering free treatment for under 18s.

“Great businesses are one of Brighouse and Calder Valley’s greatest assets, and we need to ensure the best possible dental health care for everyone.

“Good dental habits need to be encouraged from an early an age as possible by parents, carers and dental practices alike.”

The new owners of the expanding Fresh Smile Clinic have recently invested over £100,000 into the facility and have recruited a full team of health professionals to meet demand and provide affordable first class dental care for the people of West Yorkshire.

After a successful first six months in business, the relaunched practice has won What Clinic best customer service for 2015 in West Yorkshire and in January its Assistant Manager Samantha Phillips was awarded runner up for best outstanding team member 2014 by The Dentistry awards.

Reflecting on the recently published survey and its visit by MP Craig Whittaker, Principal Dentist Dr. Kirrin Punia, said: ““The survey results are a worry and it’s obvious high levels of decay and anxiety are down to eating too much sugar from snacks, sweets, and fizzy drinks. This is causing an unrestrained level of disrepair.

“This report shows that almost half of 15-year-olds have decay in their teeth, and this will be having a big impact on their day to day lives. It’s not a laughing matter, and we’re proud to be doing our bit in the Calder Valley. Parents should give us a call if they’re interested in our offer.”

Meanwhile, Craig Whittaker MP has said he’s enjoyed a successful five years serving the area and hopes to win the local elections once again in May.

He added: “There have been many highlights and I’ve met some great constituents across the Calder Valley. Serving them as their MP over the last 5 years has been an incredible privilege. My plans now are to focus on gaining another term so I can continue to serve everyone.”

The Fresh Smile Clinic, helmed by Sheffield University graduate Dr. Kirrin Punia, has enjoyed 50 new patients a month since taking over and the company has recently launched a state-of-the-art 3D CT scanner.

The state-of-the-art Practice is based in Brighouse, Huddersfield, and is the first in the area to provide this pioneering 3D X-Ray technology.

Samantha Phillips - who has worked at the clinic for 20 years – said Fresh Smile’s investment in advanced technology has brought significant improvements to dental health in the area with new patients coming as far as Sheffield.

The Scanner allows dentists to plan for complex dental procedures, such as dental implants, with incredible precision and accuracy.

The Fresh Smile Clinic is now in the process of taking referrals from other dental practices to deal with the growth of complex treatments and interest in private dentistry.

To take advantage of the Fresh Smile Clinic’s offer and to book a free consultation for your child, call 01484 714640.

The offer applies to Children and young people under the age of 18 in Calder Valley who are not currently registered with another dentist.
