Farmshop Aims For Gold In Green Tourism Awards
A WEST Country farmshop is aiming to achieve a gold rating in the Green Tourism Awards after installing new solar roof panels to improve its impact upon the environment.
Almost 1,000 state-of-the-art panels have now been installed at Puxton Park and should see the farmshop become more environmentally friendly by creating green electricity.
Green electricity has less of an impact on the environment than fossil fuels, and therefore will help the farmshop to cut its carbon footprint.
A typical solar PV system could save over a tonne of carbon dioxide per year – that’s more than 30 tonnes over its lifetime.
Puxton’s farmshop, in Weston-super-Mare, therefore hopes this new investment into renewable energy will help it boost its rating from a Bronze to Gold in the Green Tourism Awards.
The Green Tourism Awards are the largest and most established sustainable grading programme in the world, offering credible, trustworthy, independent guidance to tourism businesses wishing to operate sustainably.
Farmshop manager, Phil Payne, said: “As a farmshop we have been looking at ways we can become more environmentally friendly as our fridges and freezers consume a lot of energy.
“We therefore felt it was time to invest and have added 943 solar roof panels in order to improve our environmentally friendly status and help our planet.”
The solar panels are a further extension of their commitment to going green, with the park already recycling rain water on site and the use of a green roof on reception for extra insulation.
