Waste King Website Reveals ‘Quite Interesting’ Facts

According to the UK’s Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, Environment Agency (Defra), the people of England generate about 177m tonnes of waste every year and, every year we produce some three per cent more waste than the year before. If this rate continues, the amount of waste we produce will double every 25 years.

These are just two of the ‘quite interesting’ facts about reducing, reusing and recycling waste which have been recently published on the Waste King website. Waste King, the specialist collections, clearance and recycling company that focuses on providing a highly environmentally friendly service, operates throughout the UK and draws its customers from both the general public and the commercial world.

“On average, each person in the UK throws away their own body weight in rubbish every seven weeks,” revealed Waste King’s operations director, Andy Cattigan. “In less than two hours, the waste the UK currently produces would fill London’s Royal Albert Hall and, every eight months it would fill Lake Windermere, England’s largest and deepest lake.”

“Recycling one tonne of paper saves 17 mature trees, 7,000 gallons of water, three cubic yards of landfill space, two barrels of oil, and 4,000 kilowatt hours of electricity,” added Andy’s colleague, Waste King’s managing director, Glenn Currie, “and the average UK family throws away the equivalent of six trees worth of paper each year.

“Thankfully, some 66 per cent of paper in the UK is recycled - making it one of the country’s main recycled materials.”

Glenn and Andy formed Waste King in 2007 because they were keen to ‘do something to help the environment’. Focusing on providing a friendly, efficient, cost-effective and environmentally friendly service, Waste King’s uniformed, Environment Agency-licensed staff ensure that the maximum amount of waste is recycled and that all the waste they collect is disposed of in an environmentally friendly way.

“Typically, Waste King guarantees to recycle 98 per cent of every load of waste it collects,” said Glenn, “but, while over 75 per cent of all waste is recyclable, humans only recycle about 30 per cent of it - so there’s still much to be done. For example, between 20m and 50m metric tonnes of electrical and electronic waste are disposed of every year around the world but only 12.5 per cent of this waste is currently recycled.”
