The proposed building on Ecclesall Road in Sheffield with private and student apartments.

£35m Ecclesall Road renovation project sees major development

Plans to regenerate a site on Ecclesall Road in Sheffield with private and student apartments have made huge developments.

The £35m project, which is set to replace a former car dealership between Summerfield Street and Pear Street, near the old Wards Brewery, has been submitted to the council.

This breakthrough comes just after an overwhelming positive response in a public consultation programme over the proposed build of between 6 and 12 storeys.

Residents and business representatives, who attended a day-long exhibition organised by Sheffield-based architects Bond Bryan on behalf of Hallminster Ltd, at MAF Properties offices, described the design as imaginative and in keeping with the area.

Furthermore, visitors were happy to see the inclusion of apartments for families as the proposals will help link Ecclesall Road with the city centre.

The major development will consist of 130 high specification private apartments – with a landscaped courtyard and rooftop gardens – are envisaged, designed for single people, couples and families.

Around 44 student apartments are planned due to the increasing numbers of students from both the UK and overseas, who are choosing to study in Sheffield.

Convenience stores are expected to be located at ground level as part of the proposed development on the site of the former Pentagon Vauxhall car dealership, which is conveniently located for students of both the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University.

The project is being delivered by Hallminster Ltd. Ownership of the land, its redevelopment and its management would remain in the same local hands.

Bond Bryan, an award-winning Sheffield architects, are designing the building, which will be constructed with brick, glass and aluminium, with a contemporary appearance, designed to complement the vibrant and cosmopolitan atmosphere of their surroundings.

Details have been submitted to the council with a view to construction starting in the autumn and the first residents arriving in summer 2017.

The scheme will create 300 jobs during the construction phase and 100 plus permanent jobs.

MAF Properties, who have been providing student and private housing in Sheffield for 25 years, will be managing part of the completed development.

Dan Simpson, of Hallminster Ltd, said: “We are very encouraged by the feedback and are looking forward to delivering a high quality scheme that will regenerate a key brownfield site long overdue for redevelopment and bring even more life to the Ecclesall Road area.”
