New Managing Director appointed at Yorwaste

Steve Grieve, the Managing Director of Yorwaste Ltd, which is owned by North Yorkshire County Council and City of York Council, has decided to leave the business he has led for the last 16 years.

The new Managing Director is Steve Barker, who joined Yorwaste 18 months ago as Group Operations Director. Steve, aged 42, previously held senior positions with blue chip companies Lafarge and Tarmac.

Steve Grieve has been Yorwaste Managing Director since 1999. Under his leadership the Yorwaste Group has grown from a regional landfill company to a diversified waste management business, employing over 230 people operating across 20 sites. The Group offers a wide range of services, across the Yorkshire region and Northamptonshire, through its three major brands:-

• Yorwaste: the region’s leading commercial waste management company • SJB Recycling: the UK’s 3rd largest green waste processor • Electrical Recycling Company (ERC): a key processor of waste electrical equipment for the UK

Steve Grieve said: “Having worked in the business for such a long time it was always going to be a difficult decision to leave, however, I believe it’s a really positive and timely step for both me and Yorwaste as the business moves into another exciting phase of its development.

“I’m proud of what we have achieved over the years and wish the Company and its employees every success in the future. I am absolutely confident my successor has the credentials to take the business forward.”

Steve Barker, who lives in Harrogate with his wife Lisa and their two young children, said: “These are exciting times for the Group. The business is evolving to give increased emphasis on our customers ever changing demands in this fast moving sector.

“Core to the Group is the supply of services to our shareholders to ensure they obtain the maximum benefit from the new Allerton Park Waste Recovery Park, which is due to come on stream in 2017.

“However, in parallel we will be developing our commercial offering, focusing on the specialist niche areas where the business has developed an excellent knowledge base including green waste, liquid treatment and electrical waste recycling.”

Steve Barker will formally take up his new role on 1st May and will continue to work closely with Steve Grieve through May & June to ensure a smooth transition.
