Ivor Goodsite drops in to Calliope

It was all aboard for the nursery boys of Newcastle Boys School when they recently paid an interesting visit to HMS Calliope courtesy of Surgo Construction (Surgo) and Ivor Goodsite.

Fifteen pupils from the school had a very special trip to HMS Calliope as part of a transport topic they are covering at school.

On arrival at Calliope, where Surgo is currently onsite working on a refurbishment and extension project, the boys were greeted by representatives of the Navy, who arranged a special bridge lift for them, as well a boat launch.

This was followed by a site safety talk from construction industry mascot, Ivor Goodsite. Ivor makes regular site visits with school children to highlight the perils of playing on construction sites and teach them about staying safe.

Following their talk with Ivor, the children then met with Surgo’s construction director, Jeff Charlton, who gave them a tour of the site during which he pointed out all of the different site vehicles including a dump truck, cranes and site vans.

In true builder fashion the children enjoyed a drink in the bait cabin and were all given a party bag with treats. Each child was also provided with their own kiddie-sized hard-hat and hi-viz jacket.

Sian Woosnam, head of infants, from Newcastle School for Boys said:

‘’ The Nursery boys had a fabulous time. Visits like this really bring the curriculum to life and are a vital part of our teaching and learning. The boys have not stopped talking about it ever since!’’
