Swapping horse power for pedal power in charity bike ride
Staff at a Wigan retailer are gearing up for a 100 mile charity cycling event.
Five staff at Corkills Volkswagen are training hard for the challenging Manchester 100 event on 13 September and are hoping to raise £1000 for the Wigan and Leigh Hospice, Macmillan and Cancer Research UK.
The team of Carl Gerrard, Martin Towey, Ash Edwards, David Dean and Dean Atkins all gained interest in cycling after getting bikes through the government backed ‘bike to work’ scheme.
Carl Gerrard, a parts advisor at Corkills Volkswagen and cycling team member says that the group are training three times a week and taking part in sportive events once a month in preparation for the route which will climb over 3185ft.
He added: “We took part in last year’s 100 kilometre event and managed to raised over £600. This year we wanted to challenge ourselves further by doing the longer event and raising even more money for three very worthy causes.
“Our colleagues at Corkills Volkswagen have been brilliant in supporting us and have already got the ball rolling on our Just Giving page.”
Jacqui Kaye, Brand Manager at Corkills Volkswagen, said: “It’s fantastic to see our staff training hard and raising money for charity, it is this sort of commitment that we take pride in at Corkills.”
A Just Giving page has been set up for donations to be made at www.justgiving.com/Team-Corkills
