App compares UK Locations with cousins Down Under

You won’t see too many people strolling around Newcastle, Sheffield or Edinburgh in their swimwear, but the same can’t be said for towns and cities of the same name ‘Down Under’.

Thanks to the early settlers of the 18th and 19th centuries, many towns and cities in Australia are named after UK locations – and Australia specialist Austravel’s “Us & Aus” web app takes a light hearted look at some of the similarities and differences between them.

Besides some pretty startling visual differences the app highlights a wide range of facts and real-time information about each location. For example, although Northampton is known for witnessing the world’s first police car chase, the Northampton of Australia owes its entire existence to convicts, who helped build the town in the 19th century.

Other stark contrasts include the city and town of Newcastle. Whereas one features world-class sands, once exported to the islands of Hawaii, the other is well known for being the home of Greggs and the filming location of TV show Geordie Shore.

That said, for those who fancy a life spent among wallabies and kangaroos as well as a few dangerous insects; there are a few trade-offs. For example, the average temperature in Exmouth, Australia, is 37.9°C during the Australian summer month of January, and for those who fancy emigrating to Australia’s Londonderry, the nearest city (Perth) is a sweaty 325 miles away.

Katie Warburton, Destination Manager for Austravel, said: “Although a number of places in Australia share the same name, each town and city couldn’t be more different! We wanted to explore the true comparisons between these places and give a real glimpse into each location.”

“Whether someone is looking to explore Australia for their next holiday, or merely have a passing interest in the country, I think it’s something that a lot of people will find interesting.”
