BIU urges big business to get ESOS ready

With less that eight months until the ESOS deadline, BIU, (British Independent Utilities), a Lancashire based energy and utility consultancy, believes this is an opportunity for business not only to make reductions in energy but ultimately save costs.

The Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) is a new piece of EU legislation, which requires the UK’s biggest companies to carry out energy audits - with the first reports due in December this year.

The audit is a requirement from the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) in response to EU legislation and the scheme is being administered by the Environment Agency.

Whilst many businesses are only concentrating on compliance, BIU believes that they should look at the long-term benefits that can be gained by acting upon the recommendations of the ESOS surveys, rather than just meeting the basic requirements.

BIU’s Director of Operations, Julian Carter, explains: “Many businesses will now have to carry out energy audits as part of ESOS. They will need to use a qualified ESOS lead assessor – which involves looking at all aspects of the business’ energy use and data.”

“The audit is a measurement of all energy used across all of the company’s buildings and transport and then recommendations are provided – giving guidance on how to save energy and what additional measures can be put into place.”

“It presents a good opportunity for many businesses to audit their energy and make savings and the sooner they do this, the sooner they can reap the rewards.”

With a head office in Lytham and a strong team of Energy Managers and ESOS Lead Assessors BIU is already working with organisations across all sectors in the UK on their ESOS audit including Eurogarages, McColls and Symphony Group.

BIU’s Julian Carter added: “All customers have different priorities and it is important to understand and respect those. We use a flexible approach for all our services and ESOS is no different, so whether it is simply ensuring a company is compliant or providing a long term energy reduction plan that also fits in with the ESOS criteria, we will do everything to meet their needs.”

“We would say to businesses though that by looking to the future – it is in their interest to make the considerable energy and cost savings.”

BIU is a registered lead assessor for ESOS.
