Coda student accommodation project wins top design award

A Sheffield student accommodation complex has won city architectural design practice Coda Studios a major award.

The Dunfields project in Sheffield’s historic Kelham Island industrial quarter was named best housing development at the 2015 Local Authority Building Control Awards.

Designed by Coda and developed by Crossbow, the £2 million scheme created 18 urban houses in the European style on a former brownfield site close to the city centre, with a central communal garden area and an outdoor gym area.

“We have always firmly believed this project will add greatly to the regeneration of Kelham Island and enhance its reputation as the place to be in Sheffield,” said Coda Managing Director David Cross.

“But even more importantly, the fact that every property was sold off plan demonstrates that real confidence is returning to the property market and this award simply proves that our confidence in Dunfields was well placed.

“As the only purpose built student housing scheme in the city - as opposed to the more usual student flats – this is already proving to be an extremely popular development for young people interested in shared living.”

The LABC awards evening also saw Coda named runner up in two other award categories, for a house on Riverdale Road, Sheffield, and a restoration project in the historic village of Tickhill, near Doncaster.

“This is our 13th award in 12 years and demonstrates quite clearly why we are now leading the way in architectural design both nationally and internationally,” said David.

“With offices in Sheffield and Leeds now firmly established, we are prepared for more expansion in the months ahead and look forward to taking the Coda name into exciting new territories.”
