Matfen Hall Hotel voted best in England

A North East hotel has beaten national competition to be named Large Hotel of the Year.

Matfen Hall Hotel Golf and Spa was named the country’s best Large Hotel at the prestigious VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2015, at The Sage, Gateshead, last night (11th May).

The Gold Award is the highest Award for Excellence in Tourism in England which VisitEngland can bestow. Bernard Bloodworth, Managing Director of Matfen Hall Hotel received their award from Simon Best, Managing Director of G4S Utility and Outsourcing (UK) Ltd on behalf of Quality in Tourism, sponsor of the Large Hotel of the Year Award.

Speaking on behalf of Matfen Hall, Bernard said “I am absolutely delighted for the entire team at Matfen Hall in receiving this most prestigious national award from Visit England. This award recognises the long term approach that Sir Hugh and Lady Blackett have taken with their ancestral home, and the support they have given the team over many years. But all of this would not have been possible without the wonderful loyalty we have been shown by our regular guests and members.

I would also like to congratulate the other regional winners and finalists, Mathew Henderson from Beamish, Events Durham and The Cycle Hub. We are all fiercely proud of this region and I’m sure that these awards will further increase the awareness of the North East as a holiday location to the rest of the UK and beyond. It was a lovely coincidence that the evening took place at the Sage Gateshead which gave such an amazing backdrop on the evening’s proceedings“.

Simon said; “We are delighted to sponsor this Award, which recognises the passion for quality and excellence in the customer experience that Quality in Tourism are so proud to support. In a very competitive sector this is a fantastic achievement for Matfen Hall and we wish them every continued success in the future”.

Commenting on the Award James Berresford, VisitEngland’s Chief Executive said “We received hundreds of applications of an exceptionally high quality making the competition for a Gold Award extremely tough. It is therefore a tremendous achievement for Matfen Hall to win a Gold Award, the highest accolade for Excellence in Tourism which VisitEngland can bestow. They have raised the bar for excellence for others to aspire to and I warmly congratulate them on their exemplary contribution to tourism in this country.”

Matfen Hall Hotel, Golf and Spa, located 15 miles west of Newcastle in the charming village of Matfen, is the ancestral home of Sir Hugh and Lady Blackett. This stately home is set in 300 acres of parkland and has been a hotel since 1999.

The hotel offers 53 bedrooms, new £300,000 spa and leisure facilities and a golf estate which includes a 27-hole course, par 3 course and driving range.

Damon Roberts, Chairman of the North East Hoteliers Association congratulated Matfen Hall on their achievement by saying “I am delighted for Matfen Hall to win such a highly prestigious award, which is a great tribute to Bernard and all of the hotel team there. It is a good display of the quality of hotels that the North East has to offer.”
