Leading civil engineer supports young North East talent

One of the UK’s leading civil engineers has been working with young people starting out in the industry in the North East.

Nick Baveystock, Director General of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), took part in the ICE North East Graduates and Students Professional Development Conference.

The event focussed on the construction of “Science Central” - an ambitious development combining cutting-edge architecture, new public spaces, the world-renowned scientific expertise of Newcastle University and leading-edge businesses.

It saw 50 young members involved in discussions, workshops and talks with leading figures, including Mr Baveystock, industry experts and academics.

Hosted at Newcastle’s CastleGate, the conference delivered an insight into a number of aspects of the Science Central project from brownfield regeneration, funding issues, sustainability and the future of infrastructure. Speakers included engineers from Mott MacDonald, Newcastle City Council and Newcastle University.

Mr Baveystock said: “One of ICE’s key roles is to inspire and support young people – the next generation of engineers - as they embark on their careers within the sector.

“The Graduates and Students movement within the Institution is an excellent vehicle for young people to meet and work with others at the same stage in their career development. I was very impressed the quality of young people entering our industry and the focus on the Science Central project at the conference enabled them to engage with many different areas within civil engineering.”
