Wates awarded Considerate Construction Gold in Cambridge

The development of 22 Station Road in Cambridge has been honoured for creating a positive image of the construction industry, receiving a Considerate Constructor Scheme (CCS) Gold award.

Construction of Brookgate’s £33m office development by Wates Construction was highly praised by the CCS organisation for a pristine site appearance and comprehensive community engagement programme. To-date this has included the creation of an illustrated Pocket Career Guide for colleges and schools in the area.

An in-depth environmental policy was also highlighted for helping to reduce the project’s carbon footprint and eliminate waste whilst the provision of a full range of welfare facilities and initiatives for the workforce was also commended.

Set to be completed in summer 2015, the new five-storey, 64,770 sq ft building forms part of CB1, an extensive mixed-use development which will deliver a new city quarter for Cambridge, based around the railway station. The site is being developed in accordance with CCS principles, with work being carried out in stages to minimise disruption. Regular communication is also being issued to those affected by the delivery of these significant long-term improvements.

Wates began work on 22 Station Road at the end of 2013 and made a commitment to create a host of training and employment opportunities, including the appointment of on-site apprentices.

Ian Vickers, Managing Director for Wates Construction Home Counties, commented: “We put a huge emphasis on the respect and support we provide the neighbours of our construction sites and work hard to deliver projects that are safe, secure and environmentally sound. Recognition from the CCS for our development of 22 Station Road is testament to this commitment and we are dedicated to maintaining this as we approach completion of the building in the summer.”

Mike Petter, Chairman of the Considerate Constructors Scheme, said: “It is our privilege to reward the efforts of all those involved in projects that set the bar in terms of considerate construction. We never fail to be impressed each year by the high levels of innovation and excellence evidenced throughout the industry.

“Each award-winning project serves as a shining example as to what can be achieved across a range of different sized projects and in all sectors of the industry.”

The Wates Group received CCS awards for 37 of its projects in total, one of which was named runner-up for the Most Considerate Site in the UK. An additional two received Gold awards, a further 11 were awarded Silver and 22 received Bronze awards.

The winning projects were selected from over 9,000 eligible sites.
