Proposal made for multi-million pound Shiremoor retail development

Plans have been unveiled for a multi-million pound retail development in North Tyneside, which could create over 180 new jobs.

Northumberland Estates are drawing up proposals for land to the west of the existing Northumberland Park District Centre, in Shiremoor, where Sainsbury’s is the anchor tenant.

National planning, design and economics consultancy Nathaniel Lichfield & Partners (NLP), which is acting on behalf on behalf of Northumberland Estates, is keen to gauge local residents’ views ahead of the submission of an outline planning application to North Tyneside Council.

The development would include a new 20,000 sq ft (approx) discount foodstore and non-food retail outlets comprising around 80,000 sq ft at ground floor level, and around 40,000 sq ft at mezzanine level.

Also included in the scheme are plans for a new food and drink pod, a petrol filling station, around 364 additional parking spaces, extensive landscaping and new links to the Metro interchange and the existing district centre.

Colin Barnes, of The Northumberland Estates, said: “Our proposals would help to deliver the expansion of the existing Northumberland Park District Centre and meet the objectives of the Local Plan.

“We would encourage as many residents as possible to come and view the proposals, so that their comments can be taken into account in the planning application.”

Dan Gregg, a Senior Planner at NLP’s Newcastle office, said: “Northumberland Park is currently served by a district centre, which contains a Sainsbury’s supermarket and a number of smaller shops. However, as the local population grows, there is a need to enhance the range of shopping provision

“The proposals will enhance the shopping facilities available to residents, both in the local area and North Tyneside as a whole, and reduce the need to travel elsewhere.

“They will also generate spin-off trade for other local businesses, including those within the existing district centre, and be conveniently accessible given their proximity to the Metro station and various bus stops.

“The development could provide a significant boost for the local economy, creating around 186 new full and part time jobs, as well as other spin-off and construction employment.”

People living nearby are being invited to attend a public exhibition at The Pavilion public house at Hotspur North, Backworth Business Park, between 2pm and 7pm on Wednesday June 3.

Once local residents’ views have been obtained, it is intended that an outline planning application will be submitted in late June 2015.
