Top ten wealthiest men in Yorkshire

Throughout my time working as the Yorkshire correspondent for Bdaily, I have been pleasantly surprised on the number of big businesses and major corporations that are based in the region.

Therefore, I wanted to take a look at the people behind these industry-leading conglomerates to find out who exactly are the richest people in Yorkshire.

1. Eddie and Malcolm Healey - This may come as no surprise, but the number one wealthiest businessmen in Yorkshire are the brothers behind Sheffield’s Meadowhall Shopping Centre. Although the Healey’s sold the centre for £1.17bn in 1999, theystill top the list with an estimated fortune of £1.3bn.

2. Lord Kirkham - The Doncaster-born man behind furniture giant DFS comes in second place after making his wealth with the sale of the the furniture chain in 2010, as well as large shares in Iceland supermarkets and the Whitby fish and chip shop chain, which has earned him a total of £1.25bn.

3. Robert Miller - A US-born businessman, who co-founded the Duty Free Shops, currently owns the 36,000 acre Gunnerside Estate in North Yorkshire - one of the largest sporting country estates in Britain - which brings his wealth to £1.04bn.

4. Tony Murray - the owner Andrew Sykes Group, the heating and air-conditioning equipment hire company, and London Security, the Leeds-based fire protection business which includes the Nu-Swift fire extinguisher brand, is the final billionaire in Yorkshire’s top ten rich list, with a personal fortune of £1.01bn

5. Sir Ken Morrison - the former chairman of morrisons’ family wealth has dropped a total of £167m in the past twelve months, but he still places as the fifth wealthiest in Yorkshire due to his £733m family fortune, despite supermarket chain’s’ dismal start to the year.

6. Paul Sykes - After making his fortune with he Highstone Group and Highstone Estates, based in Harrogate, which is based in Harrogate, property tycoon Paul Sykes is sitting on £690m.

7. Terry Bramall - Once becoming a member of the wealthiest people in Yorkshire, after selling Keepmoat construction group, which specialised in social housing, for more than £500m, Mr Bramall became a director of Doncaster Rovers Football Club.

The Bramall’s also used their cash to set up the Liz and Terry Bramall Foundation, which pledges £1m a year to the Prince’s Trust as well as making one-off donations to other good causes.

8. Jack Tordoff - The man behind JCT600, the Bradford-based new and used motor retailer which has just achieved the £1bn revenue milestone, boats an impressive fortune of £368m.

9. Peter Wilkinson - The technology tycoon has earned himself millions, £360m to be exact, with the launch, development and sale technology companies including Planet Online, Sports Internet and InTechnology.

10. Roderick Evans- Rounding off the top ten is the owner of the Evans Property Group, which boosts an impressive number of properties such as the Minerva and Capitol Houses, 1 Park Row and the White Rose Shopping Centre.
