Independent North East pub operator named one of UK’s fastest growing private companies

North East and Yorkshire pub operator Wear Inns is celebrating after being recognised as one of the UK’s fastest growing private companies.

Wear Inns has been ranked 68th in the summer update of the Investec Mid-Market 100 list, one of only two companies in the North East and eight in Yorkshire to feature.

The list, compiled in conjunction with DueDil, the largest source of free private-company information in the UK and Ireland, ranks active, UK-registered companies according to their four year average compound annual growth rate, with a minimum annual turnover of between £10m and £200m.

Wear Inns, which has an estate of 26 pubs – 17 in the North East and 9 in Yorkshire - reported a full year turnover of £13.4m.

Although the company remains primarily drinks-led, food sales have increased significantly from £900k five years ago with food expected to contribute around £2.4m this year.

Chief Executive John Weir said: “We are delighted to once again be highlighted on such a prestigious well-researched list. We will always be led by drink but we expect the growth in food to continue due to our strategy of organic growth and acquisitions.

“We work closely with our key local suppliers to ensure we are able to deliver fresh, wholesome food and a wide drinks range - in particular local cask ales - to provide great value, all day every day.”

This is the fifth national accolade for Wear Inns in the past 12 months having been twice highlighted as one of the 1000 companies to inspire Britain by the London Stock Exchange, named one of Real Deal’s top 100 growth companies and featuring on the inaugural Mid-Investec100 list as well as the latest updated version.

Weir added: “This recognition is testament to the dedicated staff who have developed the business through the difficult economic conditions for our industry and the wider regional economy. Our staff have been key to our success.”
