Halliday Funeral Supplies accelerates number of FSC coffins

A leading coffin manufacturer will dramatically increase the number of its coffins certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) this year.

Last year, around 400 of the 26,000 coffins manufactured by Halliday Funeral Supplies were FSC- certified, but this year that number will increase to more than 22,000.

The significant increase in FSC coffins is part of Halliday FS’s ongoing environmental strategy.

Halliday Funeral Supplies is the only company who manufacturers FSC coffins and coffin sets.

Richard Halliday, a director of Wirral-based Halliday FS, said: “We are committed to having the most rigorous environmental standards in our business.

“We are proud that we are able to give our customers the assurance that the vast majority of the coffins we manufacture use FSC raw material. Anything derived from wood can be traced back to a forest.”

Fellow director Philip Halliday, who oversees the FSC certification process for Halliday FS, said: “FSC is massively important in our industry and we are passionate about being a champion for the scheme and the environment in general.

“Whenever we discover new supply sources, we always establish their sourcing policy for logs, their environmental impact assessments and the relationships they enjoy with various forest suppliers. It is the policy of Halliday FS to continue to exert our influence with our suppliers to ensure our environmental criteria are met.

“In order to continue being successful, we recognise the importance of the continued availability of timber from the forests of the world. As such, we are fully committed to recycling first then ensuring that re-planting is undertaken wherever felling takes place, to guarantee the continuity of our raw materials, as well as for the enjoyment of future generations.

“Each year, we have to show that we continue to comply with the rigorous FSC standards, undergoing an annual audit of our practices.”

Halliday FS’s commitment to the environment includes a number of other important elements.

Among the products the company is looking to promote further is its woodland coffin range. Unlike industry standard coffins, woodland coffins do not use wood veneer or glue and save on energy.

Halliday FS has also invested more than £250,000 in industry-leading biomass boiler and waste processing technology at its 24,500 sq.ft. site in Prenton, Wirral, during the past 12 months.

Established in 1979 by Dawn Halliday, the company is run today by her three sons, Richard, Stephen and Philip.
