Sport vehicle production to bring 300 new jobs to Nissan Sunderland

Nissan’s Sunderland factory has begun a recruitment drive to hire 300 new staff as it prepares to produce the Infiniti Q30, a new, premium sport utility vehicle.

The move is part of a £250m investment in the UK and the first premium-brand Infiniti vehicle to be built in Europe.

An extra 25,000 square metres of space have already been added to the existing Sunderland factory.

It will take the company’s Sunderland workforce to just below 6,800, supporting an estimated further 28,000 jobs in the UK automotive supply chain.

Production of the Infiniti Q30 will be followed by a second Infiniti model, the QX30.

The models will not only be the first premium cars made in Sunderland, but also the first to be exported from Sunderland to the North American and Chinese markets.

Colin Lawther, Senior Vice-President for manufacturing, purchasing and supply, said: “Infiniti production heralds the beginning of a new era.

“We’ll be looking for people who share the same obsession for detail as our highly skilled workforce in Sunderland.’

“Infiniti had a record-breaking 2014 as global sales exceeded 186,200 vehicles, up 13.5 per cent on the year before.”
