Ploughcroft wins contract to restore Halifax’s historical Piece Hall roof

Heritage roofing specialists, Ploughcroft, has secured a contract to work on the major redevelopment of Halifax’s historic landmark, Piece Hall.

The recognizable building, which originally opened in 1779, is currently undergoing regeneration work in order to conserve and repair the building in-keeping with its Grade-I listing.

Due to Piece Hall’s protected status, a heritage roofing specialist was required and as one of the only construction companies in the region qualified to complete such specific work, Ploughcroft was contacted.

As well as being a well-known historical landmark, Piece Hall was also a favourite amongst Halifax’s locals for its specialist shops, art gallery and the Tourist Information Centre.

Over the next several months, Ploughcroft will work to restore the roof of the Grade I listed building to its former glory in time for its scheduled reopening in Spring 2016.

Over 10,00 stone slates need checking for soundness, weatherproofing and qualities, as a three-storey extension is added to adjoin the Square Church spire site and Square Chapel.

The £19.2m renovation, which is now well underway, also features the restoration of the monumental structure and courtyard into a modern heritage, business, leisure and cultural destination; with a state-of-the-art interpretation and learning centre, a new east extension and a re-designed piazza.

Just last week, the Piece Hall Trust appointed Sam Mason as the multi-million pound project’s first CEO.
