Construction staff lacing up for charity climb
About 20 staff from a South Wales house builder are preparing to climb three of the highest mountains in Wales this weekend.
Staff from Persimmon Homes East Wales, which has its headquarters in Llantrisant, will be taking on Snowdon, Cadair Idris and Pen y Fan in just 15 hours on Saturday (June 27th).
The team is raising money for Alabaré, which supports Armed Forces veterans by providing accommodation, signposting them to health services, helping them to find new employment and dealing with any drug or alcohol issues.
Amongst the group taking on the energy-sapping challenge are Persimmon Homes East Wales managing director Martin Smith, planning manager Daryl Jones, head of engineering Mike Williams and marketing co-ordinator Sarah Foulkes.
Martin said: “This is going to be a real challenge and I am so proud of everyone who has signed up. We are aiming to get to Snowdon for 3am and then to start trekking at 4am, just before sunrise.
“If conditions are good, the walking should take us about eight hours, but we also have the challenge of travelling between each mountain.
“There will be a few aching legs and tired heads the following morning, but it’s all for a great cause.”
The team will take the Miners Track to the top of Snowdon, the Pony Path at Ty Nant up Cadair Idris and the slightly longer but easier route just south of the Storey Arms to the summit of Pen y Fan. In total the group will climb 9,397ft.
Persimmon Homes has strong links with the Armed Forces and recently took on its 100th ex-military recruit as part of its Combat to Construction initiative.
Martin said: “We are proud of our links with the Army and Alabaré does fantastic work in helping veterans in their transition back into civilian life.
“We are hoping to raise thousands of pounds, which will be a major boost for the charity.”
Persimmon Homes has developments located across East Wales, including in Newport, Barry, Pontypridd and Aberdare.
