Manchester Airport reports record-breaking annual figures

Manchester Airport managed to continue with its 15-month streak of growth in June, as the total number of monthly passengers increased by 3.05% and yearly figures broke a new record.

The airport, which is the third busiest in the UK and marked its 77th anniversary in June, saw year-on-year passenger throughput jump from 2.2m to 2.3m during the month.

The stats were record breaking in terms of the number of passengers using the airport annually, which rose to 22.5m, a year-on-year rise of 5.92% and the equivalent of more than 43k full Airbus A380 aeroplanes.

Ken O’Toole, the airport’s managing director, said: “June has set the foundations for a strong summer ahead, boosted by increased capacity on existing services, plus new destinations coming online.

“We’re ready and prepared for an even busier July and August once the schools finish, which is massively positive for Manchester Airport, but also for the local economy because more passengers mean we are able to support and create even more jobs and support even more local businesses in the process.”

The amount of cargo handled also rose against figures in June 2014, from 8,090 tonnes to 9,225 tonnes, which is a rise of 14.03%.

According to Manchester Airport’s data, flights to sunny destinations across Europe experienced a summer uplift, stimulated by new services offered to locations like the Greek island of Kefalonia and Bologna in northern Italy.

The airport also reported that long-haul flights to destinations in North America performed ‘strongly’, including services to holiday hotspots like Las Vegas, New York and Miami.
