Gateshead College rugby coach scores with RWC 15 role

A local FE college rugby coach will be scrumming down with the best in the business after securing a dream role at the forthcoming Rugby World Cup 2015.

Liam Gumbrill, Gateshead College’s Rugby Academy coach, has been selected as the team base coordinator for the South Africa and Samoa squads arriving in the region to play their pool matches at St James’s Park this October.

The role will see him working with the teams’ rugby officials to ensure training facilities and services are up to standard and that they have the proper documentation, policies, procedures and contingency plans.

He will also represent England Rugby 2015 at meetings while making sure that a consistent level of service is provided to all the teams participating in the event.

Other duties will include coordinating delivery schedules at the Gateshead team bases, and working with liaison officers, managers and support staff to safeguard the requirements of players.

Liam Gumbrill said: “I’m delighted and really looking forward to being involved in one of the biggest sporting events in the world; and with the region hosting some of the top teams, this role is simply the icing on the cake for any rugby lover.

“Being involved first hand with some of the world’s best players and top officials is the chance of a lifetime. It will be a unique experience that I’m sure I will be able to share with the college’s rugby union students.”

Gateshead College Academy of Sport students work with coaches to perfect their sporting skills whilst gaining academic and coaching qualifications, all in an environment which inspires them to achieve great success.
