Work continues on expansion of Kentish Flats wind farm
Project co-ordinator Ramsgate has started work to increase the number of wind turbines on the Kentish Flats wind farm
One of three wind farms off the coast of Kent, Kentish Flats is expanded its fleet from 30 to 45 turbines, according to the BBC.
The wind farm already produces power for 40,000 homes and the additional 15, which are slightly larger than the original ones, will be enough for an additional 35,000 homes.
Six turbines have already been installed on the site, off Herne Bay, according to Swedish energy company Vattenfall.
The 15 new turbines will be switched on later this year, and it is expected they will be fully operational and exporting power to the national grid by early 2016.
Matthew Green, Vattenfall’s project director said:“Vattenfall is making good progress on Kentish Flats Extension in this period of calm weather.
“Anyone watching from the shore will be able to watch a very challenging job with 155 tonne steel towers, 70 metres tall - in two sections getting lifted in one go and bolted onto the foundation, the nacelle - which houses the generator - at 160 tonnes - goes on top, followed by the hub into which three 55 metre blades, 12 tonnes each, are fitted.”
