Meadowhall reports best sales performance in last five years

Sheffield’s Meadowhall Shopping Centre has recorded a 5.7% year on year sales increase so far in 2015, with June seeing a significant 10% rise on the same month last year, marking the 15th consecutive month of sales growth for the Centre.

This is the Centre’s best financial performance in the past 5 years and eclipsing the national sales statistics released by the British Retail Consortium last week that showed a much smaller rise of 1.8% for June.

Restaurants in the Centre recorded a 14% sales increase in June, which was largely achieved with the opening of the new supersize Nandos and recently refurbished Wagamama.

Furthermore, the has also been a surge with the Centre’s travel agents shoppers booking last-minute holidays this year, which resulted in a 31% uplift, year on year.

Mixed fashion stores across the Centre have seen a 7% increase year on year in sales and other highlights include; footwear up 17%, womenswear up 9% and menswear up 10%.

These strong sales figures were recorded whilst Meadowhall welcomed an array of new, high-end brands. Fashion brands Jack & Jones and Jigsaw have recently taken positions within the Centre, along with the White Company, White Stuff and jewellery retailers Cadenzza.

These new stores join the already established line-up of high end brands in Meadowhall, including Kurt Geiger, LK Bennett and Reiss among many others.

Flagship brands such as House of Fraser, which include high end concessions such as Michael Kors within their store, are also going from strength to strength further establishing the Centre as one of the top destinations for designer clothes.

As well as the addition of new brands, several existing Centre tenants have also enjoyed substantial refurbishments recently including flagship store Topshop, the digital concept Argos store and Tessuti within the Centre.

The sales and new retailer announcements come fast on the heels of a recent £3m project in the Park Lane area within the Centre - ahead of the £50m refurbishment announcement from Meadowhall’s owners British Land.

Darren Pearce, Meadowhall centre director, said: “The recent sales figures are indicative of a renewed consumer and retail confidence: great news for Meadowhall; our local economy, and the region. June registered some of the hottest days on record but it didn’t stop customers from visiting and updating their summer wardrobes.

“We have new brands and retailers coming on board every month to complement and strengthen our existing offering - reinforcing Meadowhall as the premier shopping destination in the region both today and into the future.

“It is almost 25 years since we opened our doors but we work as hard now to ensure a compelling retail offer for our customers as we did then. The £50m investment announced recently by British Land reflects their continued commitment to Meadowhall and everyone who works, shops and visits here.”
